Representation for individuals.

Careful planning is the key to financial success and security in sports and entertainment. Our attorneys know that professional athletes, entertainers, personalities, musicians, and artists need proper advice and guidance to plan a career. A skilled and experienced advocate is needed to secure the best sponsorship agreements, endorsements, licenses, and other contracts.

We are available to help you to define and achieve your goals and leverage your talents. Our attorneys can negotiate contracts on behalf of talented individuals. We know the best deal is the smartest deal both at work and in the accumulation of personal wealth. We can counsel clients to minimize disputes and help navigate career decisions. When necessary, we can defend our artists in litigation and bring litigation to protect their best interests.

Representation for organizations.

The worlds of sports and entertainment center not only on individuals and employers. These industries rely on unions, guilds, non-profits, and other organizations to create and protect entrepreneurial opportunities.

As labor lawyers, we have substantial experience working in the collective bargaining environment. We fight in arbitrations, proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and in the courts. We have negotiated major collective bargaining agreements. We have worked to change collective bargaining laws and rights. Joel A. Smith organized the World Umpires Association, the collective bargaining agent for Major League Baseball’s umpires, and served as labor counsel for seven years. Mr. Smith has worked as legal counsel for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 19, and for the American Federation of Musicians. Mr. Smith has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 1990 in the areas of Labor & Employment Law, Sports Law, and Entertainment Law. He also was selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers – Maryland 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007.

Finally, our attorneys include government contract attorneys, who have experience working with businesses engaged with the State and its intercollegiate athletic programs. Our attorneys understand the nuances of procurement and government contract law. We can assist at every stage of the procurement process. From proposal preparation and bid protests through contract claim resolution, we can advise clients on how to achieve their goals while remaining in compliance with government rules.
